In this webinar, we talk about how to bring both discipline and art to the act of creating — even when they might seem contradictory to each other.
I’ve broken this webinar recording into two parts:
- Part I – My Talk: I talk about what it would be like to create a small but powerful practice to regularly turn toward that which we fear in our finances. (See notes)
- Part II – Questions & Answers: I answered some amazing questions from participants, a must-watch.
Part I: Leo’s Talk (with notes)
Here are the notes from my talk:
Sea Change Webinar: Creating a Regular Practice with Finances
The Problem:
We put off dealing with our finances because it doesn’t feel good, it stresses us out. But then this leads to ignoring, which leads to more difficulties as things pile up and get more stressful and overwhelming.
So we can’t ignore, and it’s worse when we let it pile up.
The Practice:
If we can turn our finances into a regular practice, it will make things so much easier and less stressful. We’ll deal with things in much smaller chunks, and it can even become a breeze.
In fact, if we think of this as a practice in mindfulness and intention, we can even turn this into something meaningful and enjoyable.
Imagine this:
You have a daily practice of just 5 minutes, maybe 10 minutes at the most … you log your spending, reallocate your budget amounts if needed, take care of bills.
It’s easy and quick.
But you might also bring some meaning into the ritual …
As you start, you remind yourself of the financial life you’re trying to build.
You remind yourself that this is a practice of dealing with the finances before they become overwhelmingly stressful.
You remind yourself that this is connected to something more meaningful than your own discomfort — your family’s happiness, for example, or a purposeful business you’re trying to create to serve others. You get outside of your world of comfort and self-interest, to something bigger.
This small ritual of 5 minutes, then, becomes easy but also connected to something meaningful in your life.
Small task but big purpose. That’s what we’re aiming for.
Let me walk you through my ritual.
- Set intentions
- Update YNAB
- Pay bills, if any
- Face something I’m fearing, in a small way
- Gratitude
Part II: Questions & Answers
In this 2nd part of the webinar, I answered some great questions from those who attended, including:
- Dealing with the emotional ties to our finances, like shame
- Seeing how our childhood shaped our relationship with finances, including how our parents expressed their love
- And more!
